Nice but fragile By Tim from Columbia, SC on July 5, 2011 I bought this because of good reviews, small size, and ability to be modded for amateur use. It was bought for emergency use only. All was well until the AF front end went out for no apparent reason while out of warranty and I was told that it would cost $189 to repair. Since it had been sitting in my flight bag I was very surprised.Pros:Size, ability to be modified for amateur use.Cons:Apparently fragile, and high cost of repair.Great Handheld packed with many features By Chuck Karver from Peachtree, GA on March 17, 2011 The VXA-710 is a solid handheld. Not only is it small like a cell phone (minus antenna) but it's water proof too. I found out when I first purchased it (my son used it as a BATH toy without my knowledge). I thought i lost it but it powered right up with no problem. Keying in the frequency is also a snap. Just type in the frequency and that's it... no enter or ok to press to confirm. All the features work the way it should and WFM...music on a talkie just blew my mind. I highly recommend this handheld....!!!Pros:Sold design, many features, multiple receive capabilities, great buy....Cons:A lot of features...beware. If you think it can;t do it think again. Once you get into the sub menu (F +SEL) you are given many. many options to choose from. anywhere from SQL, LOCK: Key* Dial* PTT to color options on the strobe light. So you have to make a quick reference chart on what you want to do from the manual. I taped mine on the back. My comments reflect that use only]The Vertex Standard VXA-710 radio has a lot of positives. It is small, durable and has Li-ion batteries. The display is full dot matrix with a great resolution (lots of dots). The radio is feature packed.For my use, the radio has too many negatives. The Li-ion battery is the only pack which can transmit. The accessory AA pack is receive only power. The keypad is pretty difficult to press, but the rotary dial frequency selector is very easy to rotate--inadvertently. The rotary selector does not lock with the panel lock command. The markings on the keypad make no sense to me as a casual (emergency) user. The typical COM/NAV air bands are not marked with something intuitive like "AIR" or "COM" or "NAV." They are called "VFO" which means something like Variable Frequency Oscillator (not sure exactly). This arcane marking is true throughout the radio. Adjusting the squelch is about a four step process and is not intuitive. There's no "Enter" or OK button to finish entering a frequency. Either enter remaining zeros or press a key with a strange label. The VOR CDI and OBS make sense, but barely. There's no flip flop or recently used frequency history (not an easy one, anyway). For someone who is going to use this radio in an emergency situation as the sole A/C radio, it is missing too many features for me. It is, as I said, well built and full of features. 160 Memory Channels (Incl. Pre-programmed "Book" Memories): The extensive Memory system of the VXA-710 includes 70 “Main” memories, plus ninety preprogrammed “Book” memories, for quick and easy recall of often-used frequencies. The memories may be labeled with a title, for quick recognition. Submersible (IPX7): The VXA-710's case, speaker enclosure, and controls are carefully sealed against water ingress, allowing the transceiver to be specified for protection against water ingress per IPX7 specifications (immersion to 3 feet/1 m for 30 minutes). So you need not fear using your VXA-710 during severe weather. Rugged Magnesium Die-Cast Construction: The unmatched ruggedness of the VXA-710 is coupled with ultra-light weight, thanks to the die-cast magnesium case and chassis construction. Rubber bumpers on the bottom corners of the case protect it against damage from every-day bumps and scrapes. Supplied Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery: The VXA-710 is supplied with a super-long-life 7.4 V, 1400 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (FNB-80LI), providing many hours of operation and reliable charging without the “memory” effects that can plague other battery types. With the optional CD-15A Charging Stand and NC-72B/C AC Adapter, the FNB-80LI may be charged in as little as 2.5 hours, so you'll quickly be ready for more operating action! NOAA Weather Channels (U.S.A. Only): The Spirit can receive all 10 NOAA weather broadcast frequencies. The Automatic Active Weather Channel Locator (a Vertex Standard exclusive) automatically scans for active NOAA weather stations in your area when WX band is selected. NOAA “Severe Weather” Alert (U.S.A. Only): The VXA-710 includes a special feature that sounds an alarm when the special "Severe Weather" alert tone is received from a Weather Broadcast station. NWR (NOAA Weather Radio) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day. Working with the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Emergency Alert System, NWR is an "All Hazards" radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 telephone outages).
