I used it extensively to monitor tower chatter and it really helped me learn about standard exchange communication. Now, I'm very comfortable talking to controllers. I even impressed my instructor when we went on our practice cross country flights. Easy to customize. Now I enter the frequencies of other airports before I leave, and I'm always ready just in case I have a radio failure. It gives me a great sense of security. I'll never leave the Vertex at home. By the way, the battery life is amazing!Pros:Easy to set up. Super battery life. Waterproof if you get into the rain. Lighted screen. Great sound. Feels good and sturdy in your hand.I would recommend this item to a friend.Great little radio with a loud report![]() By Dan R from Red Bluff, CA on December 29, 2010 As a ham radio operator I have had a lot of experience with yaesu products. The VXA-300 shows that Vertex hasn't declined in thier willingness to provide a good, solid, dependable radio at a competative price. the speaker is LOUD and the audio output works wonderful. Several easy to get to custom menu settings allow the user to set up the radio just as they want. Voice opperated control or, VOX makes communicating a breeze. The navigation features seem to work fine but honestly I haven't had too much chance to use them. Great radio, great price, great customer service from SKY GEEK. Pros:Small compact design keeps the radio out of the way until it's needed.Great sound quality both TX and RX. Water proof! no worries about walking in the rain with it. Cons:What I dislike about it? .... I didn't buy it sooner.I would recommend this item to a friend.Great Radio![]() By R. E.Head on September 6, 2009 Great radio. I use it for both ground and in-cockpit glider ops. I purchased it at the end of May 09 specifically for the 800mW audio output since there are three active runways at our airport (K34) and it gets pretty noisy with all of the power pilots coming for breakfast on the weekends.Audio is excellent, and so is the reception. I could hear aircraft using CTAF 122.800 when I was on the ground at home, 20 miles from the airport. Haven't used the NAV functions but, for the slight increase in price, I thought they might come in handy sometime. Other guys say NAV functions on an HT are basically worthless. Time will tell. I researched the Vertex radios and the Icom A24 and A6. All of them are good rigs. One of the other glider pilots has the IC-A6 and loves it. As a ham radio guy, I've owned other Vertex (Yaesu) radios and always found them excellent, and that's what tipped the scale in favor of the Vertex. One caution if you're considering the Vertex 710 "Spirit' radio: I have the exact same ham radio (Yaesu VX-7R with different Tx freqs, obviously, but it has airband Rx) and found that the audio output is not nearly loud enough for noisy operations, even at full volume. I really wanted that radio since I could use all of the same accessories from my ham rig. FeaturesDirect Frequency Entry via Easy-To read Back-Lit Keypad: For quick access to operating frequencies, simply enter the frequency information directly from the 16 button keypad, then press the Push To Talk (PTT) button to transmit. There's no need to store frequencies in memory before you can operate on them. 5 Watts of Clean Power Output: For reliable communications over difficult communications paths, the VXA-300 provides 5 Watts of transmitter power (1.5 W carrier). With its excellent audio clarity, the VXA-300's transmitter will get your message through! Receiver Audio Pitch Control: For improved reception under difficult conditions, the receiver's audio frequency response may be quickly adjusted by the user, to enhance either the high-frequency or low-frequency components, depending on the noise and/or interference encountered. A Vertex Standard exclusive! 250 Memory Channels:The 150 regular memory channels and 100 pre-programmed Book memory channels can store just about any commonly-used operating frequencies that you choose. And the memories may be labeled with an Alpha-numeric title of up to 8 characters, for easy recognition. One Touch Squelch Control: Breaking the squelch threshold has never been easier. Press the monitor (MON) button for two seconds to open the Pilot III's squelch continuously. Press MON again to restore the original squelch settings. This is TRUE one handed operation, without the need to fumble around with tightly spaced concentric knobs. Receive Battery Saver: This feature is designed to maximize the life of the transceiver's battery. When the Pilot III is in the standby mode the battery saver de-energizes the transceiver's circuitry, waking it up at user selected intervals to sample for radio activity. If no activity is detected the Pilot goes back into its sleep mode. Current consumption is minimized, thereby maximizing battery life. This feature is only found on Vertex Standard Airband transceivers. NOAA Weather Channels (U.S.A. Only)The Pilot III can receive all 10 NOAA weather broadcast frequencies. The Automatic Active Weather Channel Locator (a Vertex Standard exclusive) automatically scans for active NOAA weather stations in your area when WX band is selected. NWR (NOAA Weather Radio) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day. Working with the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Emergency Alert System, NWR is an "All Hazards" radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 telephone outages). Known as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce. NWR includes more than 940 transmitters, covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories. NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal. Broadcasts are found in the VHF public service band at these seven frequencies (MHz):
Versatile Scanning Features:The VXA-300's versatile scanning capability allows you to monitor a number of different channels efficiently. The VXA-300 will scan the COM band, main or Book memories, or the Weather band (U.S. version), and also includes provision for Dual Watch and Priority Revert Dual Watch that always ensures transmission on a Priority channel. PA Feature:When the optional MH-44B4B or other external microphone is used, the VXA-300 may be used as a portable Public Address system, with user programmable configuration available for the voice monitoring in a headset. 3-Way Tilting and Back-Lit Display:Easy to use, versatile access to channel information is critical to successful transceiver operation. Only Vertex Standard Airband transceivers offer you one-keystroke access to three different methods of displaying memory channel information: Frequency, Channel Number, or Alpha-Numeric title.
