The need for shortening a threaded fastener is a very common occurrence in commercial industry and can be a time consuming project. Tools presently available today do not seem to do a cutting operation without leaving a screw cut with un-marred threads. These tools appear to be manufactured from metal stampings and are riveted together. They are primarily designed to crimp solder-less electrical connectors. They also cut smaller sized bolts and screws. After not too many cuts, tool performance falls off drastically.
Uni-Tech’s goal is to produce and market a tool which will do a precise and repeatable job of shortening threaded products WITHOUT distorting or marring the threads of the screw being cut or quickly wearing the tool out.
The UNI-TECH SBS-1 Screw & Bolt Shear is a precision cutting device manufactured from high quality tool steel which is machined to very close tolerances, hardened and tempered, cadmium plated for corrosion resistance and laser engraved for operator use and clarity. The action and function of the tool is similar to a “guillotine” design and is quite effective in cutting screws and bolts to a specific length. The SBS-1 will accommodate cutting all threaded products in sizes 4-40, 6-32, 8-32, 10-32, 10-24, ¼-20 and ¼-28…The tool will cut all materials such as brass, mild steel, Grade 3, 5 or 8 hardened steel and stainless steel. No other tool in the market will accommodate cutting AN-4 (1/4-28) aircraft bolts even though this common size often needs trimming along with stainless steel trim and instrument screws. A 2.5” scale is laser imprinted on the right side of the tool body to make the final measurement of the cut bolt a simple task.
The cutting blade is made from a special grade of high impact and shock resistant tool steel, hardened and ground to precision dimensions with a rugged and efficient cutting angle. The cutting blade is a ½” longer than the tool body which provides additional material to accommodate an occasional dressing or sharpening of the cutting blade should the need arise. Extra blades are available at a nominal price but are rarely needed. The tool will easily cut ALL metals without damage to the tool’s cutting blade edge and tool body -or- the cut screw’s threads.
