When AirGizmos first started planning the instrument panel layout for their RV-9A, They knew the budget would not allow to install an expensive certified GPS. Instead they planned to install a handheld GPS in the panel. The idea was to mount it flush with the instrument panel so a professional look was consistent throughout the cockpit. In addition they wanted to be able to remove the handheld GPS when necessary.
Comparing their “Wish List” to the what was available out of the box from the Manufacturer it was determined a solution had to be built. Through the help of a friend versed in product design a prototype was developed along with the idea that there may be a market for these units throughout the Aviation world.
The result of all this “Brainstorming” is the AirGizmos GPS196, 296 & 396 Panel Dock. From the initial installation of the prototype in the AirGizmo RV-9A it was clearly nicer than any other mounting solution that was on the market. Best of all, it allowed for quick and easy removal of the GPS unit whenever necessary. This is a great feature when you want to flight plan in the FBO instead of the cockpit. It is also handy when you want to use your portable GPS for road trips, and being able to quickly remove the unit from the plane for security reasons.
The Panel Dock is designed to fit the Garmin GPSMap 196, 296, 396 & 496 handheld GPS units. The GPS is held firmly in place, but can be easily removed by pulling the release tab, located on the left side of the unit.
The Panel Dock is designed to fit in a standard 6.25" avionics stack, but it can also be flush-mounted anywhere else in the panel. An enormous amount of effort has been given to make it look like it belongs in a panel.
The antenna and power cables slide through prefabricated "keyholes" in the back of the unit, which keeps the connectors from slipping back into the panel when the unit is removed.
