The Americas Version covers all of North America, Central America, Caribbean and South America as far south as AntarcticaThe Garmin 696 with XM – To put it simply, the 696 is the cream of the crop. If you’re looking for the ultimate in aviation GPS, the Garmin 696 is it. The large display screen on the Garmin 696 allows for a wide range of features not possible on smaller units. These features include a large map with a split screen panel page, a super high-resolution terrain page that shows hazards relative to your altitude, a vertical profile of terrain along your flight route, and a whole lot more.
The Garmin 696 GPSMAP® has an ultra crisp 7 inch digital display screen that’s very bright and readable in sunlight. The color on the Garmin 696 is as rich as any portable aviation GPS on the market today.
New to the Garmin 696 are extremely useful weather features like Icing Forecast and Pilot Reports ( 696 XM WX Satellite Weather "Aviator Pro" subscription needed for the newest weather products). The 696 XM Aviator package delivers NEXRAD images with Echo Tops & Cell Movement. This is in addition to Terminal Forecasts, TFRs, graphic / textual METARs, Winds Aloft and a lot more.
The Garmin 696 also features enhanced operations / functionality with an integrated rotary joystick (knob) known as a "click stick." This new addition eliminates rocker pad data entry by offering an efficient, intuitive, easy to use rotary stick that selects alpha numerics and advances the cursor with a simple tap of the joystick. This same joystick also makes map panning and waypoint identification a breeze.
Here’s yet another great feature found in the GPSMAP 696. Garmin FliteCharts® adds Class I / Class II Electronic Flight Bag capability. This allows you to drastically reduce the amount of paper you need to use and hold onto in the cockpit. FliteCharts are derived from NACO Terminal Procedures. They cover the entire United States and are preloaded electronically in the unit. FliteCharts disable when the data becomes over 6 months out-of-date. A subscription is needed for continuous availability of the charts. Owners can subscribe to FlightCharts at the fly.garmin.com website. There you can also update every necessary database to ensure you’re GPSMAP 696 is up to date. This is very easy and can be done in three simple steps.
All in all, this is the ultimate in aviation GPS. The GPSMAP Garmin 696 carries over the most popular aviation features of the 496 (including Smart Airspace, SafeTaxi (US only), Towers & Obstructions (US and Europe), AOPA Airport Directory data (US only) and fast 5 Hz GPS updates.
