An ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter) is designed to emit an Emergency signal on 121.5MHz and 243.0MHz automatically on impact. This is done either by manual activation or by the use of a switch. An ELT gives Search and Rescue teams a much better chance of pinpointing the exact location of a downed aircraft.
