problem with intermittent short where cable enters 1/4 inch socket

Sound in headset drops in and out as cables move. Appears to be a short where the cable enters the 1/4 inch socket. The same with two of them so far forme, and several reviews online describing the same symptoms. Could be a bad design or bad batch.

BTW, the 3.5 mm plug is fully inserted into the radio when this happens. I can feel the threads bottom out to a hard stop when screwing in the plug.
