They have come up with the most technologically advanced mini multi-function display (call it a mini-MFD if you want to impress your buddies(. The GPSMAP Garmin 496 is truly a marvel of technology. There are some pretty amazing and useful functions on this unit which range from a full color screen to satellite weather (oops, maybe we had better stay home and not go get that $100 hamburger after all, looks like there is a giant storm on the way) and terrain alerting (always good to know when your belly might be in danger of scraping on a mountaintop) - the Garmin 496 is similar to the Garmin 396 but the added functions we mentioned make it just that much better. View Your Exact Position on Taxiways The Garmin SafeTaxi data feature provides very detailed taxiway diagrams & position information for more than 650 United States airports. This information, which is preloaded on the Garmin 496 unit, shows your aircrafts exact position on the field and helps you confidently navigate unfamiliar airports. Access the AOPA Airport Directory Included on the Garmin 496 is the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory. Now you can choose fuel stops, plan an overnight, easily look up taxi services and much more. With the Garmin 496 you can have the names and phone numbers of thousands of FBOs right at your fingertips. You’ll also have immediate access to detailed information for over 5,300 U.S. airports. You’ll even find great information on local ground transportation, restaurants, lodging, attractions and more. Receive Altitude Sensitive Alerts With the Garmin GPSMAP 496 it’s easier than ever to identify what airspace lies ahead of you. While you’re in the air, Garmin's new Smart Airspace feature automatically highlights airspace close to your current altitude and de-emphasizes airspace away from your current altitude. This gives you increased situational awareness. Experience a Faster Update Rate The Garmin 496 updates map data and Panel page instruments at 5 Hz for added realism and safety. This is a significantly faster update-rate which provides you with a smoother, near real time presentation of your aircrafts analog indicators, such as the HSI and turn coordinator. Enhanced Situational Awareness The GPSMAP 496 features a built in Jeppesen database along with terrain and United States obstacle databases. The Garmin 496 shows your flight route over contour terrain mapping. The higher resolution terrain database offers more than 10 times as much data as the 396, therefore providing even more visual reference. Using information from the terrain and U.S. obstacle databases, the GPSMAP 496 monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain and provide alerts. You can even customize your minimum clearance levels in order to receive terrain cautions. The addition of private airports and heliports to the database makes available even more navigation enhancements as well as the nearest emergency options. Add Weather, Traffic & Radio With the 496 you can make informed decisions based on weather & traffic with optional services and sensors. A subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather and the included GXM 30A smart antenna gives you access to constantly updated, high resolution weather data for the U.S, right in your cockpit. This weather information includes: Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft. In The BoxAviation Limited WarrantyAll Garmin avionics products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for: two years from the date of purchase for new TSO Remote-Mount and TSO Panel-Mount products; one year from the date of purchase for new Non-TSO Remote-Mount and Non-TSO Panel-Mount, portable products and any purchased newly-overhauled products; six months for newly-overhauled products exchanged through a Garmin Authorized Service Center; and 90 days for factory repaired or newly-overhauled products exchanged at Garmin in lieu of repair. Within the applicable period, Garmin will, at its sole option, repair or replace any components that fail in normal use. Such repairs or replacement will be made at no charge to the customer for parts or labor, provided that the customer shall be responsible for any transportation cost. This warranty does not apply to: (i) cosmetic damage, such as scratches, nicks and dents; (ii) consumable parts, such as batteries, unless product damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (iii) damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, water, flood, fire, or other acts of nature or external causes; (iv) damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not an authorized service provider of Garmin; or (v) damage to a product that has been modified or altered without the written permission of Garmin.
